July 2004

Languid mornings seem to set the tone for July. Cycles of life and death continue in nature’s realm, but with summer’s abundance even the flitting of chickadees seems more relaxed. In patches of sun one can find the slow courtship flight of insects gathering in the fly version of a singles bar. Around us trees and grasses, bushes and flowers, silently gather the sun’s energy for growth and reproduction. And in shallow water pools--a children’s bucket, or an empty can—mosquito larvae live out their quiet lives in a microcosm. Scales large and small. Life and summer in full swing.
