Between winter flu and summer sneezes lies the season of smells. From the rich aroma of earth released by a shovel’s blade to the sweet fragrance of cherry blossoms, our natural world is awash in the odors of spring.
Accompanying these olfactory treasures are visual signals—obvious bursts of color—attractive to our eyes, but also to their intended targets—bees and flies. In an ancient cooperative drama plant attracts animal, offers a sweet reward, and in response the insect carries on the plant’s future.
Soon the plants that depend on less animated forces will cast their futures to the wind. My eyes will greet this new development with tears and my nose will join in--a dubious celebration. So, until then, and before today’s rain and wind, I can revel in the glory of our senses filled and enjoy nature’s play—scenes changed day to day, new players added, costumes brilliant, script dynamic….
